This weekend we saw lots of friends and David (finally!) cooked in the new kitchen for the first time.
On Friday night we went out with Stefanie and Chris to Acadiana where Chris is the pastry chef. The restaurant specializes in southern Louisiana style cuisine, and we had a fantastic meal. We got to hear about Stefanie’s fantastic new job and sampled some of Chris’ yummy creations. We didn’t have nearly enough room to finish the desserts we ordered- but they were amazing. Check out his menu. The same restaurant group owns DC Coast, TenPenh, and Ceiba- and I’ve got to say I’ve never had a disappointing meal at any of these places.
As a side note- although I’ve never been, I’ve heard that Acadiana’s weekly Crawfish Boils are good. Held every Friday from 3:30-6:30 pm, guests have their choice of crawfish ($13 per pound) or shrimp ($17 per pound), plus potatoes and fresh corn on the cob. If it’s your thing, this sound like good summertime fun.
On Saturday we went to a tasting featuring the wines of Washington State. The tastings were done blindly- meaning we had no knowledge about the wine prior to tasting. All of the bottles were wrapped in aluminum foil ahead of time- and it really makes you concentrate on when you smell, taste and see. No amazing discoveries were made, but we did meet a very nice group of folks.
Sunday afternoon brought the much anticipated arrival of the one and only Jodi! David cooked a great dinner and it was so good to catch up and spend some time with my former roomie. I’ve missed her a lot. We also got to meet Jodi’s friend Dimitry who is spending some time in the DC area this summer.
This season we are trying to embrace rose, so we started the evening by enjoying some hors devours on the balcony with a 2007 Tavel Carte d'Or. Crisp and refreshing, it was clean and went nicely with the variety of cheeses we had.
With dinner, we enjoyed one of our tried and true standbys, a 2007 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough. I didn’t think the grapefruit or grass scents were nearly as profound as I’ve experiences with previous bottles, but it was still very flavorful and enjoyable.
With dessert, we had a 1997 Navarro Vineyards Gewürztraminer Cluster Select Late Harvest. Somewhat of a floral nose, this wine had smooth almost unctuous mouth feel. Notes of orange blossom on the palate with a nice acidity on the finish.
Jodi is here for the rest of the week visiting friends (I seriously think she knows more people in DC than I do) and I am so glad she came to town!
